GLOBAL WARMING & CLIMATE CHANGE: ‘OUR’ PROBLEM?

In major speeches this October both Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown have concentrated on stressing the ‘vital need to address the problem of global warming and climate change.’

Significant changes, we are told, must take place if we are to successfully combat this growing problem. Huge increases in stealth taxes, named in a leaked report as ‘eco-taxes’, have been mentioned which would impose a financial burden on all sections of society.

Yet it is not ‘all’ sections of society who have caused this problem in the first place.

It is not the working class who control industry and can control pollution, it is not the working class who own the means of production in this society and can control, in any shape or form, the way the atmosphere is damaged. On the contrary, it is government and the multinationals who have reaped billions of pounds of profit over the years without any thought as to how their actions have affected the planet, yet now, when the time has come to seriously address the problem, it suddenly becomes ‘our’ responsibility, and it is now a problem that ‘we’ have to pay for.

Incredibly a letter from Environment Secretary Alan Miliband to Gordon Brown dated 18th October 2006 emphasises that the answer to these problems can only be addressed by ‘market forces and price signals.’

Yet it is precisely the ‘market forces’ philosophy that has been responsible for the rape of the planet Earth for the last historical period, with its ‘profit at all costs’ mentality. The ‘market philosophy’ is not the answer to the problem, it is the cause of the problem!

While the ruling class have gorged themselves on the profits made from this planet’s natural resources, and have gathered wealth unimagined, with not a thought given to the damage they have done to our environment, they have, at the same time, done all in their power to drive the real value of wages for the rest of society downwards with the result of record personal debt, record bankruptcies and record debt related suicides.

And they now have the effrontery to try and ‘make the working class pay’ for their irresponsibility.

The working class and their trade unions have every right to answer this hypocrisy with the response that we will indeed take responsibility for addressing the problems of global warming and climate change caused by the capitalist system, and we will do that by taking control of all major industry, banks and financial institutions and all the means of production and in that way ‘we’ will control ‘our’ environment with a planned and logical socialist economic system based on the needs of people and their world and not on the ‘profit before everything’ principle which has led us into this mess in the first place.

30th October 2006.
